Our Story

 

My name is Gülcan (pronounced - Gooljan)

Every beautiful celebration is anchored by the moments that make us pause, feel connected, and say thank you.

For me, those moments have always been deeply intertwined with the sights, sounds, and traditions of my heritage.

I was born in Türkiye and raised here in Australia, growing up completely immersed in both worlds, but with a heart forever bound to our Mediterranean traditions.

In our culture, hospitality isn't just a polite gesture; it’s a way of living. Growing up, the bonbonniere or sugared almonds were a central part of every major milestone.

They were the precious tokens guests were given as they left a celebration, a sweet reminder of a shared joy.

I still remember how my mum would bring those sugared almonds home and carefully place them on display in her TV cabinet. They weren't just decorations; they were the very gateway to beautiful memories.

Whenever guests came to visit our home, Mum would offer them the sugared almonds from the cabinet. Over cups of rich, aromatic Turkish coffee and warm conversation, the stories of those wonderful evenings would come alive all over again.

I grew up listening to the echoing laughter filling the room as everyone reminisced about the wonderful evening. Someone would remember a specific detail, someone else would interpret it a little differently, and everyone would chip in with their own storytelling.

The laughter would grow louder and louder as the conversation flowed, building a bridge right back to that beautiful evening. Often, they would even put music on and just get up and dance right there in the living room they truly had such a wonderful time.

The concept of the bonbonniere is a centuries-old tradition steeped in beautiful sentiment.

Traditionally, five sugared almonds are gifted to guests, with each one representing a distinct blessing for the journey ahead: Health, Wealth, Happiness, Longevity, and Fertility.

But somewhere along the way, amidst the fast-paced rush of modern event planning, these deeply intentional gestures began to feel like an afterthought.

I wanted to change that Five Sugar Almonds was born from a desire to breathe new life into this beautiful ritual. We aren't inventing something new; we are honouring what has always been beautiful. I wanted to take the nostalgia of those vibrant, shared conversations from my childhood and reimagine it for the modern host elevating it into something sophisticated, elegant, and deeply emotional.
